Makko AI is a web studio that makes 2D game art first, then builds a playable browser game from it. Here is what its free plan covers and where else to make a game.

## Which one to pick

**Pick Makko AI if:** You work on a computer and care most about the art. Makko builds characters, gear, animations and backgrounds in one matching style, then codes a 2D game around them. You own the games and assets, can sell them with no revenue share, and Makko says you can export everything you make.

**Pick Roam if:** You want to make and play on your phone. One sentence becomes a game, and you play it with friends. Roam has no web or PC version, so Makko, Rosebud or GDevelop fit better if you build on a laptop.

## What Makko AI does well

Makko calls itself a studio for 2D worlds. You start a Collection, describe your world and get concept art. Then you turn a concept into a character with gear and animate it: walk, attack, idle. Collections keep your characters in one style across every scene, animation and pose.

When the art is ready, you describe the game in plain English in Code Studio and Makko builds it with your own characters. You publish in one click and send anyone a link to play. You can also use only the Art Studio and export the art to other engines.

## Is Makko AI free?

Yes, there is a free plan with no credit card. It gives 150 art credits a month and 70 chat requests a week for coding. Makko says 150 art credits are about 30 characters, or 30 props and backgrounds, or 3 sprite animations. Free art credits reset each month.

The free plan has limits. You run one art job at a time, animations are Lite quality at 720p, and each Collection saves up to 10 concept arts. Paid plans from $20 to $200 a month lift these. Credit top-ups run from $5 for 200 credits to $250 for 12,500, and they never expire.

## No art pipeline first, just the game on your phone

Roam starts on the phone, not in a web studio. You do not build the art first. You type one sentence, or add a photo of your friend, your pet or a meme, and Roam makes a game from it. Then you change it by talking: "more enemies", "add a boss".

Play it solo or with friends. There is also a feed of games other people made.

- **Rosebud AI** The nearest web match: you describe a game and edit it with its AI, with a 3D Game Maker plus 2D and 3D asset tools. The free plan gives 10,000 credits a week; an edit with the default AI costs about 2,000. Paid plans run $15 to $100 a month, with commercial rights from $30.
- **GDevelop** A free, open-source engine (MIT license) for 2D, 3D and multiplayer games. It runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, the web, iPhone and Android. You build with an editor, and the free plan adds 40 AI credits a month, 3 cloud projects and one multiplayer lobby of up to 4 players.
- **Astrocade** Web, iPhone and Android. Describe a game and its AI builds the art, sound and gameplay, then you share it and swipe a feed of games from other people. The app is free. Its terms say some AI output counts as Astrocade Content, which you may use only to make and publish games on Astrocade.
- **Google Playground** Google's game maker runs in a browser on a phone or laptop. It launched in October 2026 for users in the US who are 18 or older. Some genres support multiplayer, and games can go into its Explore gallery.
