Which one to pick

Pick Buildbox if

You want a desktop engine built around drag-and-drop and nodes, and you plan to export a game to Android or PC. Its AI tools speed up placing objects and building scenes, and you still control every node.

Pick Roam if

You want to make a game on your phone with no editor and no project files. Type a sentence and play the result. Roam games live in the Roam app, so an engine fits better if you want your own store release.

What Buildbox does well

Buildbox is a no-code game engine from App Onboard. You build with drag-and-drop objects and nodes for logic, so you can make a game without writing code. It makes 2D and 3D games, per its plans page.

Buildbox 4 added AI in April 2024. You can type a prompt like "add a car" to place an object, add effects like fire, fog or snow, or generate a whole scene from a description. AI can also edit node logic or write custom nodes. Version 4.1.1 in September 2024 added an agentic AI assistant that talks with you about how to build your game.

Buildbox still ships updates and community news on its blog in 2026. The Buildbox World app on iPhone lets people play and share small games made with the desktop app.

Is Buildbox free?

Partly. Buildbox's plans page lists a Free plan for Buildbox 4 with 2D and 3D games, 1 world and 20 scenes. Its Steam page also files Buildbox 4 under Free To Play.

The paid yearly plans are where exports show up. The plans page lists unlimited exports to Android and PC, more worlds and scenes, and a monthly AI token budget on the paid tiers. The Free plan's list does not mention exports. Check current prices and limits on the plans page before you subscribe.

Nodes on a desktop, or a sentence on your phone

The two start in different places. Buildbox is a full engine on a computer. You place each object, wire the logic and test, with AI to speed up the steps. That control is the point if you want to ship a game of your own.

Roam skips the engine. The input is one sentence, or a photo of your friend, your dog or a meme. You get a game you can play right away. You change it by talking: "more enemies", "add a boss". Then you play it solo or with friends. Roam's terms say you keep ownership of what you make.

Other Buildbox alternatives

  • GDevelop An open-source no-code engine for Windows, Mac, Linux, the web, iPhone and Android. The free plan has 40 AI credits a month and daily Android and desktop exports; App Store export starts on the Gold plan.
  • Godot A free, open-source engine under the MIT license, with dedicated 2D and 3D tools. It exports to desktop, mobile and the web. You write logic yourself, so it asks more than a no-code tool.
  • Construct 3 An editor that runs in a browser. The free edition allows 50 events and 2 layers and publishes to the web. Paid licenses add desktop, Android and iOS exports and take no royalties.
  • Castle A phone app for iPhone and Android with editor tools for art, physics, logic, music and sound, plus templates and remix. Its release notes mention parties and multiplayer.
