Which one to pick

Play Scratch games if

You want free games made by other players and want to see how they work. You can open a shared project in the editor and remix it. Scratch works best on a computer or a tablet with a keyboard.

Make your own on Roam if

You want your own game on your iPhone without building it block by block. Describe it in a sentence or start from a photo, then change it by talking. Roam has no web or PC version and does not make Scratch projects, so stay with Scratch to learn to code.

The most viewed Scratch games we checked

One creator stands out. griffpatch made nine of the ten games in the table, and he teaches Scratch coding on YouTube. Paper Minecraft is his most viewed project by far, with about 67 million views and more than 72,000 remixes. It is a fan-made 2D take on Minecraft and is not an official Mojang game.

Many of his other hits are also fan remakes of famous games, like Getting Over It (22.7M views) and Hill Climb Racing (6.9M). We put mostly his original games in the table instead. Start with Appel: a full platformer with a story, wall jumps, speed runs and community levels.

Newer Scratch games that got featured

Older games collect the most views. These newer ones say in their own notes that they were featured.

  • Deja Moo! by catScratchhhhh A cow clones itself with an alien ship to switch off the farmer's beams and escape the farm. Made for the Pixel Game Maker Awards jam. About 174K views.
  • Target Rush! by zenithIsReal Click colored targets for points in one minute, and stay away from the glitch targets. About 237K views.
  • Guide The Geese by KrackenCodes Guide lost geese back to their ponds with your finger or the mouse. About 117K views.
  • propeller hat cat by sooop-dumpling Float a cat around, collect sushi and dodge raindrops. 9 lives, 120 points to win. About 89K views.

Scratch games on iPad and phones

Scratch's Help Center says you can play, but not create, Scratch projects on most smartphones in the browser version of Scratch. There is no Scratch app for smartphones. The Scratch app download page lists Windows, macOS, ChromeOS and Android tablets, not iPad. On tablets, the Scratch Team supports Mobile Safari and Mobile Chrome.

The catch is controls. Most top games want arrow keys, WASD or a mouse. On an iPad without a keyboard, pick games built for touch. Guide The Geese says it is mobile friendly, Level EATEN! lets you tap the sides and top of the screen, and propeller hat cat has an on-screen joystick.

Scratch games to play with friends

Some Scratch games use cloud variables, so players on different computers share one game. Massive Multiplayer Platformer puts everyone on one course, and the fastest live player shows in rainbow colors. Taco Burp is a flying shooter for up to 8 players, and its notes link a second server.

Where to find good Scratch games

Open Explore on scratch.mit.edu and pick the Games tab. The home page also has Featured Projects and Featured Studios rows. Studios collect games around a theme or a game jam, like the one behind Deja Moo!. When you find a creator you like, open their profile to see all their shared projects.

Scratch is free for everyone, says the Scratch Foundation, and the Scratch Wiki says it is aimed at ages 8 to 16. Scratch's Terms of Service give other users a license to modify shared projects for personal use inside Scratch. That is how remixing works.

Scratch games to make, easiest first

Make a game like these on your phone

Roam is an iPhone app where you play games and make your own. Type a sentence like "a snail stretches its neck over gaps to reach berries, 10 levels" or start from a photo. It comes back as a game you can play. Then say "add a boss" or "make it two-player" to change it. No blocks and no code. You keep ownership of what you make.

Your own platformer, on your iPhone

Describe the platformer you have in mind in one sentence, then play it on your iPhone with your friends.

Try: "a little ninja wall jumps through 10 levels to collect golden fruit, the last level has a boss, my friend plays the second ninja"
