Daily puzzle games for your morning
Daily puzzles work because there is one a day and everyone gets the same one. Here is a lineup to build a morning routine from, sorted by the kind of thinking each puzzle wants, plus two Roam puzzles and a way to make one for your group.
The lineup, by kind of thinking
- Letters: Wordle (The New York Times). Guess the five-letter word in six tries. The default first puzzle of the day.
- Groups: Connections (The New York Times). Sort 16 words into four hidden groups.
- Themes: Strands (The New York Times). Find themed words in a letter grid.
- Clues: The Mini Crossword (The New York Times). A small 5x5 crossword you can finish in a minute or two. It now needs a NYT Games subscription.
- Logic: Pips (The New York Times, August 2025). Place dominoes so the board's conditions are met. Easy, medium and hard boards each day.
- Words: Spelling Bee (The New York Times). Make words from seven letters in a honeycomb. Free up to a point, then it needs a subscription.
A 10-minute routine
Start with the fastest puzzle to warm up: the Mini or Wordle. Move to one that needs patterns, like Connections. End with logic, like Pips on easy or medium, when your head is fully on.
Keep it to three or four. A routine that takes 30 minutes stops being a routine. Share only the score, never the answer, so the group chat stays fun.
Puzzles on Roam
Daily puzzles give you the same game with a new board. Roam is a free iPhone app where you play games people made, or describe a puzzle in a sentence and play that instead.
Two Roam puzzles fit the morning slot well. Bend the Light has you bounce a beam off mirrors to wake the planets. Snap to Crown is a jigsaw path builder: fit the piece and walk the king home.
