Shark games: be the shark or survive it

Shark games come in two kinds: you are the shark and eat everything in sight, or a shark hunts you and your boat. Hungry Shark Evolution is still the best known, more than ten years after launch. Here are the shark games worth playing, which ones suit younger kids, and how to make one set at your local beach.

Play as the shark

Survive the shark

For younger kids, the eat-and-grow games are the gentle choice: bright fish, simple goals and no blood. SharkBite 2 is mild too. Maneater is the one to skip until they are older.

Shark games on Roam

Roam is a free iPhone app with four shark and fish games in the feed. Hungry Shark is the full loop: eat, grow and keep that hunger bar full, and friends can join. Bite the Beach starts you small and gives you one goal: eat everything and reach the beach.

Fish Frenzy and GULP are the Feeding Frenzy style. Eat the small ones, avoid the big ones, grow, and swim away from anything bigger than you. Each round is short enough for a bus stop.

Play it on Roam

Make a shark game at your local beach with Roam

Name the beach, say who the shark is, and Roam builds it. Then change it by talking: more swimmers, a bigger shark, a second player.

Try: "shark game at my local beach, I am the shark, eat the inflatables, lifeguards chase me, my friends are the swimmers"
