The landing craft rocks toward the shore, the ramp drops and your squad runs onto Omaha Beach. Beachhead '44 is a WW2 shooter that starts with the D-Day landing itself: a sergeant shouts orders, smoke drifts over steel hedgehogs and the objective reads 'Clear the obstacles, 6 left'. Drag to aim, hold FIRE, throw grenades at bunkers and push up the sand. It is an Omaha Beach game with a cinematic opening, played free in the Roam app on iPhone.

Taking the beach

  1. Watch the landing craft intro, or skip it to start sooner.
  2. Move with the joystick, drag to aim and hold FIRE to shoot.
  3. Throw grenades, reload or swap weapons with the side buttons.
  4. Clear the obstacles and push up the beach position by position (POS 1 of 4).

What it gets right

  • A cinematic landing-craft opening
  • A squad of soldiers around you, with explosions and smoke
  • Hedgehogs and bunkers modeled on the real beach defenses
  • Grenades, an 8-round magazine and quick weapon swaps

An Omaha Beach game in the Call of Duty tradition

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Call of Duty: WWII both built their most famous levels around Omaha Beach. Beachhead '44 brings that moment to the phone: the boat, the ramp, the run up the sand.

It focuses on the landing, with clear objectives like clearing obstacles while you move forward under fire.

Tips for getting off the beach

Keep an eye on the obstacle counter. It tells you how many remain, so you always know how close the next position is.

Use grenades on bunkers instead of trading rifle shots. Your magazine holds eight rounds, so reload before you break cover.

Push in short runs between pieces of cover, and stop to aim when you get there.

The history behind it

Omaha Beach was one of five Allied landing beaches in Normandy on June 6, 1944, and the hardest fought. The steel hedgehogs and bunkers in the game come from that day.

Beachhead '44 is an action game, not a documentary, but the setting is real.
