A watermelon sits at the start of a curved wooden track high above floating islands, a windmill turns in the distance, and the goal reads roll to the finish ring. Roll or Splat is a rolling ball game in the Roam app on iPhone, and the name tells you both endings. Drag up to roll, steer through the bends, grab coins and use boost on the straights. Fall off the edge and the watermelon does exactly what you think.

Rolling controls

  1. Drag up on the joystick to roll forward.
  2. Steer left and right to stay on the track.
  3. Tap the lightning button to boost.
  4. Collect coins along the way.
  5. Reach the finish ring without falling off.

What makes it a good balance game

  • A rolling watermelon with real physics on wooden tracks.
  • Floating islands and a windmill far below the course.
  • A boost button for speed when the track is safe.
  • A level progress bar and a score plate.

If you like Going Balls or Super Monkey Ball

Going Balls made rolling courses a mobile hit: a ball, a narrow track and a long drop. Super Monkey Ball did it first with tilting stages. Roll or Splat plays in that same family. You guide a rolling object along a path in the sky and try not to fall.

The ball here is a watermelon, which makes every fall funny instead of frustrating. There are other fruit characters too, shown by the icons at the top.

Tips for a rolling ball game with no rails

Slow down before curves. Speed is great on straights, but a bend at full speed throws you off the side. Boost only when you can see a long straight ahead.

Small steering moves work better than big ones. The watermelon keeps rolling after you let go, so plan a little ahead of where you want to be.

Coins usually mark a safe line. If you are not sure where to go, follow them, and save the risky shortcuts for when you know the track.

Who will like Roll or Splat

Anyone who likes short, skill-based courses. A level is quick, the controls are simple and a fall only means trying again.
