The menu shows eight floors in Roman numerals, and only floor I is open. Press Descend and you are in a ruined stone dungeon in first person, axe in hand, with health and stamina bars and a key counter that reads 0 of 1. Skeletons stand between you and that key, and the key opens the way to the next floor. Split the Bones is a dungeon crawl for fans of melee combat games, played in first person in the Roam app on iPhone.

How a descent works

  1. Pick an unlocked floor and tap Descend.
  2. Explore the ruins and fight skeletons up close with your axe.
  3. Watch your health and stamina bars during fights.
  4. Find the floor's key, then go down to unlock the next floor.

Why it is a good crawl

  • Eight floors, from I to VIII, unlocked one at a time
  • Up-close axe combat in first person
  • A simple goal on every floor: find the key
  • Lit stone ruins with a heavy, old-dungeon mood

What a dungeon crawler looks like on a phone

Classic first person dungeon crawlers, from Ultima Underworld to Legend of Grimrock, are about walls, corridors and what waits around the corner. Split the Bones keeps that view and adds direct melee: you swing an axe instead of clicking menus.

The structure is simple. Every floor is a level, every level has one key, and the menu shows how far down you have come.

Tips for floor I

Fight one skeleton at a time. Back up into a corridor so they come to you in a line.

The key is the goal, so explore every room until the counter shows 1 of 1. Coins along the way are a bonus.

Built for fans of melee combat games

Split the Bones is action first. There are no party menus or long stat screens between you and the next fight.

It suits players who like fantasy combat with weight, and anyone who wants to see how deep eight floors go.

Floors II to VIII stay locked until you reach them, so every new numeral on the menu is a small victory.

Split the Bones FAQ

Is Split the Bones free on iPhone?

Yes. Split the Bones is free in the Roam app, from floor I all the way to VIII.

How many floors are in Split the Bones?

Eight, from I to VIII. Floor I is open at the start and the rest unlock as you go deeper. The menu marks locked floors, so you can see how far is left.

Skeletons, up close, with an axe. If you like melee combat games, this is the part to look forward to: health and stamina bars show how each fight is going.

Is Split the Bones like Legend of Grimrock?
