Night falls over Kestrelmoor, a cobbled medieval town lit by a few lanterns. You hold a dagger, your marks walk the streets, and the one rule is in the name: stay in the dark. Step into lamplight and you are seen. Slip behind someone in the shadows and their purse is yours. It is one of the few medieval stealth games built for a phone, and Kestrelmoor costs nothing to visit: play it in the Roam app on iPhone.

The thief's rules

  1. Move with the joystick and drag the screen to look around.
  2. Stay out of the lamplight. Light means your marks can see you.
  3. Sneak up behind a target and pickpocket them with the action button.
  4. Keep the dagger ready for when sneaking is not enough.

Why it feels like a real heist

  • Light and shadow are the core mechanic, not just the mood
  • A moonlit, dithered medieval town with glowing lanterns
  • Pickpocketing instead of fighting as the main way to win
  • A dagger for close calls

If you like Thief

The Thief series made shadows a tool: if you are in the dark, you are safe. Stay in the Dark builds on exactly that idea. You read the street, find the gaps between lamps and wait for your mark to pass.

It is smaller and more focused than a full PC stealth game, built around one town and one night. That keeps each attempt short, and a failed try costs you a minute, not an hour. You learn the streets of Kestrelmoor by walking them, lamp by lamp.

Tips for staying unseen

Watch the lamp circles before you move. Plan a path from shadow to shadow, then go.

Patience beats speed here. Let the mark walk past a lamp before you follow. If you get spotted, back off into the dark instead of forcing it, and try a different street.

What makes it different from other medieval stealth games

Most stealth games on phones are top-down. This one is first person, so the lamplight sits right in front of you and every corner feels risky. The retro dithered look also makes the dark actually dark.

Stay in the Dark FAQ

Is Stay in the Dark free on iPhone?

Yes. It runs in the Roam app, which is free to download from the App Store.

Is Stay in the Dark like Thief?

Yes, in spirit. Both use light and shadow as the main stealth tool and reward picking pockets over open fights.

Can you fight in Stay in the Dark?

You carry a dagger, but the game is built around sneaking. Staying unseen is the main way to win.

Are there medieval stealth games like this on iPhone?

Not many in first person. Stay in the Dark is a short, focused one: one town, one night, and light-based stealth you can learn in a minute in the Roam app.
