Chapter One opens at Boot Hill Gate, where the town's dead have climbed out of their graves at sunset. Tee Off the Dead is a zombie golf game you play in the Roam app on iPhone. You are a cowboy golfer: drag to aim, hold to charge, and drive golf balls into the horde before it reaches the gate. Clip a rocket crate and, as the game puts it, it goes up like the Fourth of July.

What makes a zombie golf game fun

Golf asks for one careful swing. A zombie horde asks for many fast ones. Tee Off the Dead mixes the two: every shot needs aim and power, but the targets keep shuffling toward you, so there is no time to line up a perfect putt.

The rocket crates are the treat. Land a ball on one in the middle of a crowd and the blast clears a whole group.

How it compares to other zombie defense games

Most zombie defense games give you towers or turrets to place and watch. Here the defense is one golfer at a gate and whatever he can hit. Every zombie you stop is a shot you aimed yourself.

That makes it closer to an arcade shooting gallery than a strategy game, with a western graveyard as the driving range.

Tips for Boot Hill Gate

Aim for the crowd, not the lone walker. A ball into a tight group or a crate near it does far more work than a perfect hit on one zombie.

Do not overcharge every swing. A full charge looks great, but a quick shot at the closest zombie can save the gate.
