The crowd is packed into the stands, a fire brazier burns above the ring, and the wrestler across from you is twice your size. Shove Souls is a sumo wrestling game played in the Roam app on iPhone. Tap or hold the hands button to shove, parry the giant's slaps and roll away from its charges, then push it over the edge of the ring to win the bout. Eight bouts stand between you and the end of the run.

Shove, parry, roll

  1. Move around the ring with the joystick.
  2. Tap the hands button for a quick shove, or hold it to keep pushing.
  3. Tap parry to turn an attack aside.
  4. Tap roll to dodge a charge.
  5. Push the giant out of the ring to take the bout.

What the ring offers

  • Giant spirit wrestlers far bigger than your fighter
  • Three moves that matter: shove, parry and roll
  • A run of eight bouts, tracked at the top of the screen
  • A torch-lit arena with a full crowd and warm, dramatic light

Why this sumo wrestling game is not a button masher

Size is the whole story. Your wrestler is small, so trading shoves head on rarely goes your way. You win by parrying at the right moment, rolling out of a charge and then shoving while the giant is off balance.

That turns each bout into a short read of your opponent. It is physical and loud, but it rewards patience more than speed.

How it compares to other sumo games

Many sumo games are silly ragdoll party games for two players on one couch. Shove Souls is a solo duel against computer opponents with a serious, almost mythic look. The goal is the oldest one in sumo: get the other wrestler out of the ring.

The spirit giants give it a boss-fight feel. Each bout is a new wrestler to figure out, and a clean ring-out feels earned.

Tips for your first bout

Stay near the middle. The closer you are to the edge, the less room you have to roll, and one big shove can end the bout.

Wait for the giant to commit. Parry the slap, roll past the charge, then hold the shove button while it turns around. A held push beats a string of weak taps.

Is Shove Souls a two-player sumo game?

No. It is a single-player sumo wrestling game: you face computer-controlled spirit giants on your own.

Yes. It comes inside Roam, a free app for iPhone, so every bout is free.

What are the spirit wrestlers in Shove Souls?

Huge, pale sumo giants that tower over your fighter. They slap and charge, and each one has to be pushed out of the ring before the next bout starts.
