Which one to pick

Pick Google Playground if

You are 18 or older in the US, you want to make games on a laptop as well as a phone, and you like to choose 2D or 3D yourself. If you already pay for a Google AI plan, you get more tokens for making.

Pick Roam if

You want an app on your iPhone, not a browser tab. A sentence becomes a game, and your friends can be in it with you. Roam has no web or PC version, so Playground wins if you make games on a computer.

What Google Playground is

This page is about Google's AI game platform at playground.google, not a coding sandbox or a kids' playground. Google launched it on October 7, 2026 and calls it an experimental gaming platform for creating, playing and sharing games with no coding.

You describe the game in a chat. You can start from a blank canvas, remix a starter prompt or follow guided help, then test the game right away and ask for changes to physics, rules, characters or the world. TechCrunch reports that creators pick 2D or 3D and single-player or multiplayer.

Finished games can stay private, go to friends and family by link, or be published to the Explore gallery, which uses player ratings and play activity to pick what to show. Google says published games go through safety screening, and players can report them.

The best Google Playground games

Is Google Playground free?

Playing is free. TechCrunch reports that browsing and playing games in the catalog costs nothing, while making games uses a weekly token system. The free tier gets a limited number of tokens, and Google AI subscribers get higher limits. Google's own post says creation access is tiered by your Google AI subscription. Neither names an exact token amount.

So you can try it for free, but how much you can make each week depends on your plan. Check the limits inside Playground before you start a big project.

Google Playground vs Roblox

Roblox is a huge multiplayer platform. Its games are built in Roblox Studio, a free app for Windows and Mac, and its own prompt-to-game option, Build, is a tab in the Roblox mobile app that is rolling out by region. Roblox games live inside Roblox.

Playground is a separate, browser-based maker from Google. It is open to adults in the US, it has its own Explore gallery, and Google says it plans to add Unity Spark tools in a later update. Pick Roblox if you want the Roblox audience. Pick Playground if you want to describe a game in a browser and you meet its age and country rules.

An iPhone app, not a browser tab

Roam is an app on your iPhone, built around the people in your group chat. Type the game in a sentence, or drop in a photo of your friend, your dog or a meme screenshot, and it comes back playable with a world, art, characters, sound and rules.

You change it by talking: "more enemies", "make it two-player". Play it solo first, then with friends when they join. Roam's terms say you keep ownership of what you make, and Roam gets a license to run, improve and showcase it.

Other Google Playground alternatives

  • Astrocade Web, iPhone and Android. Describe a game and its AI builds the art, sound and gameplay, then share it in a big feed of short games. Its terms prohibit use under 13.
  • Rosebud AI A web editor where you chat with its AI and can read the code. The free plan is 10,000 credits a week, and an edit with the default AI costs about 2,000.
  • GDevelop A free, open-source game engine with an editor on Windows, Mac, Linux, the web, iPhone and Android. Its free plan includes 40 AI credits a month.
  • Roblox Build A prompt-to-game tab inside the Roblox mobile app, rolling out by region, for age-checked users 9 and older where it is live.

Make it on your phone, with your friends in it

Type the game you would have made in Playground as one sentence, and play it with your friends on your iPhone.

Try: "kart race through our school hallways, my friends are the rivals, banana peels, three laps"
