How to make a horror game that actually scares people
A good horror game is not about gore. It is about one threat, too little light and a rule the player is scared to break. Get those right and even a small game made in Scratch or on a phone will make people jump.
Five rules of horror design
- One threat. One monster with clear behavior is scarier than ten. The player should learn how it moves and dread it.
- Scarce light. A flashlight with a battery, a lighter, a camera with limited power. Darkness hides your cheap art and makes every corner a question.
- Sound before sight. Footsteps, a door, breathing. Players should hear the threat coming before they see it. Sound is half of horror.
- A rule you must not break. Do not run. Do not look back. Do not let her see you. Rules make the player the cause of their own death.
- A chase or a deadline. Fear needs pressure: a monster that finds you, or a clock to 6 AM.
Four loops that work in short horror games
- Night shift. Sit still, watch cameras, close doors, manage power. Five Nights at Freddy's (Scott Cawthon, 2014) made this famous.
- Anomaly loop. Walk the same hallway and spot what changed, or start over. The Exit 8 (Kotake Create, 2023) is the model.
- Escape the house. Find keys and get out while something hunts you. Each failed run teaches the layout.
- Stealth. Every step makes noise. Move only when it is safe. Works great with a red-light rule.
Tools for each kind of horror game
Roblox horror hits like Doors are built in Roblox Studio on a computer, with scripts in Luau. Scratch is free and fine for 2D jump-scare and night-shift games. Godot and Unity handle first-person 3D if you are ready to learn an engine.
If you want to test your idea tonight, describe it to Roam on your iPhone. It comes back playable, with sound, and you tune the fear by asking: "darker", "she hears footsteps from further away", "add a second night".
Play it on Roam
TALLOWNight one. She keeps a tidy house. Find a way out.
Hazmat HallwaysClock in, get the lights on, and photograph what should not be there.
EXIT 8Something wrong: turn back. Nothing wrong: keep going.
Night WatchSix hours, two doors, one battery.

Mind Your PeasEat your peas. Don't let him see you eat them.
Create your horror game with Roam
Give Roam one threat, one rule and a place. Play it with the lights off, then make it scarier by talking.
Try: "empty hospital at night, flashlight with 2 minutes of battery, never run or the nurse hears you, find 4 fuses"Questions people ask
What makes a horror game scary?
Anticipation. Limited light, sound cues and a threat the player cannot fight create more fear than jump scares alone.
