Puzzle game ideas: one rule, then three ways to twist it
Good puzzle games teach one rule, then twist it. Portal taught you to place two portals. Baba Is You lets you push the rules themselves around. Each idea below is one rule plus three level ideas that bend it, with a sentence to type into Roam.
Six rules with three levels each
- Light: bounce the beam. Rotate mirrors to hit a target. Level 1: one mirror. Level 2: colored glass that changes the beam. Level 3: a moving mirror on a timer. Type: "light puzzle, rotate mirrors to hit 3 planets, colored glass changes the beam."
- Gravity: flip the room. Turn the room so the ball rolls to the goal. Level 1: walls only. Level 2: spikes on the ceiling. Level 3: two balls that must land at once. Type: "rotate the room to roll the ball into the hole, 20 levels."
- Time: rewind one object. Rewind one thing at a time. Level 1: a falling crate. Level 2: a door that closes. Level 3: rewind yourself. Type: "puzzle where I can rewind one object, reach the exit in each room."
- Sorting: pour the colors. Pour liquid between bottles until each has one color. Level 1: three colors. Level 2: a bottle you can only fill once. Level 3: potions that mix. Type: "potion sort puzzle, pour until each flask has one color, then put them on the shelf."
- Cutting: snip to drop. Cut ropes so the candy falls into the mouth. Level 1: one rope. Level 2: a bubble that floats. Level 3: a moving target. Type: "cut the ropes to drop the snack into my dog's mouth, collect 3 stars."
- Combining: mix elements. Combine two things to make a third. Level 1: fire plus water. Level 2: limited moves. Level 3: find the secret element. Type: "combine elements to discover 50 new ones, fire plus water makes steam."
How to design the levels
Level one should be almost impossible to fail, so the player learns the rule by doing it. Level two adds one new thing. Level three combines what they know in a way they did not expect. That last moment is the "aha", and it is the reason people play puzzle games.
Never add a new rule and a hard layout in the same level. Teach first, test second.
