Behind your steam locomotive there is a wall of fog, and in the fog there are two giant glowing eyes. Outrun the Fog is a train survival game in the Roam app on iPhone. You walk the train, tap Stoke to feed coal into the firebox, and fire at the flying creatures while a meter shows how close the fog is. The first level, Cold Departure, runs through a snowy city of tower blocks.

Running the train

Drag to walk around the train.
Tap Stoke to feed the fire and keep your speed up.
Tap Fire to shoot the creatures that fly in.
Collect coal and gears, and keep the gap to the fog from shrinking to zero.

The threat is different. Instead of a long ride to an end station, the danger is right behind you: a fog bank with eyes. The meter makes the stakes clear every second.

Train survival game tips

Stoke first, shoot second. A strong fire buys you meters, and meters buy you time to clear the sky.

Pick up coal whenever you pass it, since the fire is what keeps the fog behind you. When creatures fly in, shoot quickly and get back to the firebox.

What makes it different

Most train games are about schedules or sightseeing. Outrun the Fog is a chase. The engine, the fire and your aim are all you have, and the fog does not slow down.

The snowy city is a strong setting too: tower blocks, falling snow and smoke from the stack, with the glowing eyes always behind you. It looks like a horror film and plays like an arcade game.
