How to make a survival game that keeps the pressure on
Survival games run on pressure. Meters drop, night comes, and the player has to gather and craft before it is too late. Two needs, a short crafting tree and one nightly threat are enough for the core.
Needs: pick two or three
Don't Starve (Klei Entertainment, 2013) tracks hunger, health and sanity. Minecraft's survival mode uses health and hunger and sends monsters at night. Both prove you do not need ten meters.
- Food. Drops slowly all the time. Forces the player to leave safety.
- Warmth or light. Drops fast at night or in cold areas. Ties the player to a fire they must feed.
- A third, only if it adds choices. Sanity, thirst or oxygen. Add it when it changes where players go, not just what they click.
A crafting tree that leads somewhere
- Tier 1: hands. Wood, stone, fiber. Craft an axe and a torch in the first minute of play.
- Tier 2: camp. A fire, a shelter, a chest. Now the player has a place to defend.
- Tier 3: reach. Better tools, walls, traps, a boat. Each one opens a new area or beats a new threat.
Day and night
Day is for gathering, night is for holding out. Keep the first day short so players hit the first night early and learn the stakes. Make each night a bit harder than the last, and give a clear goal for surviving, like a count of nights or a rescue. 99 Nights in the Forest on Roblox is built on exactly that promise.
How to build it
In Roblox Studio, change Lighting.ClockTime from a script to run the day-night cycle and store hunger as a number on each player. Studio runs on Windows and macOS. Unity and Godot have survival tutorials and free assets for inventory and crafting.
Or describe it to Roam, a free iPhone app. Name the place, the needs and what comes at night. It comes back playable, solo or with friends, and you tune it by talking: "nights are longer", "add a wolf pack on night 3".
Play it on Roam
Last LightGather firewood. Keep the fire alive. Make it to morning.
Frozen FrontierHaul the wood, light the fire, keep the camp alive till morning.
BLOCKSURVIVEAn empty hotbar, a lake and a tree to punch.
Hold Till DawnPunch a tree. Build a wall. Wait for the sun.
Dust by DuskGrab what glints. Be done by dusk.
Bunker SurvivorHazmat suit on. Crowbar out. Lights mostly off.
Create your survival game with Roam
Pick the place, the two needs and the night threat. Play it on your iPhone and make the nights harder in the same chat.
Try: "survive 10 nights on a frozen island, keep the fire lit, craft spears from driftwood, wolves come at night, friends can join"Questions people ask
How do you make a survival game in Roblox?
In Roblox Studio, script a day-night cycle with Lighting.ClockTime, give each player a hunger value that drops over time, add resources to gather and enemies that spawn at night.
What makes a survival game fun?
Pressure with a way out. Needs that push you to explore, a camp you care about, and nights that test what you built.
Can I make a survival crafting game without coding?
Yes. Roam builds one from a sentence on iPhone. Engine kits cut the code in Unity, but some scripting is still needed there.
