How to make a game on iPad
An iPad can make real games, but not with every tool. Swift Playground, GDevelop, Codea and Pocket Code run as iPad apps, and the Scratch website works in Safari. Roblox Studio does not run on iPad at all.
What works on iPad
- Swift Playground. Free from Apple for iPad and Mac. You learn Swift, build apps with SwiftUI, and can submit a finished app to App Store Connect.
- GDevelop. A free, open-source no-code engine with an iPad app. You build with event sheets. Its AI helper runs on limited free credits, and some features are in paid plans.
- Codea. A creative coding app for iPad and iPhone where you make games in Lua. Free for projects up to 500 lines, with Codea Pro for bigger ones.
- Pocket Code. A free, open-source block coding app from the Catrobat project for games and animations.
- Scratch in Safari. The Scratch editor works on tablets, which suit it far better than phones. For ages 5 to 7, the ScratchJr app runs on iPad.
- Roblox Build. A prompt-to-game tab in the Roblox mobile app. Its public alpha began in New Zealand in July 2026 and is opening country by country. It needs an age check (users 9+).
What does not work
Roblox Studio is free but runs only on Windows and macOS, so a full Roblox game with Luau scripts needs a computer. The Unity and Unreal editors are desktop tools too. You can play Roblox games on iPad, just not build them in Studio.
Free and no-code picks
Free: Swift Playground, Pocket Code, Scratch and GDevelop's free tier. No code: GDevelop's event sheets, Pocket Code's blocks, and Roblox Build if it has reached your region.
If you also have an iPhone, there is another route. Roam is built for iPhone: describe a game in a sentence or a photo, and it comes back playable with world, art, sound and rules. Change it by asking, then build the bigger version with one of the iPad tools above if the idea holds up.
Got an iPhone too? Create it with Roam
Roam is free on iPhone. Describe your game, play it the same day, and change it by talking.
