Cut the Timeline is a side-scrolling cyberpunk sword game, played in the Roam app on iPhone. Rain falls, lightning flashes and pink and cyan signs light up a city alley full of robots. You slash them down, dash straight through their wind-ups and jump over attacks. Fight across five stages, and fire your special burst when the game tells you the skill is ready.

Controls

  1. Move with the joystick on the left.
  2. Tap the sword to slash and the arrow to dash.
  3. Jump over attacks and gaps.
  4. Fire your special burst when you see "Skill ready".
  5. Clear the stage and move on to the next of five.

What stands out

  • Five neon city stages, from Neon 1/5 onward
  • Sword, dash, jump and a special burst
  • Robot enemies with readable wind-ups
  • Stage progress dots so you know how far you are

A cyberpunk sword game you play sideways

Big cyberpunk games are open worlds. Cut the Timeline goes the other way. It is a side-scrolling brawler, closer to the beat em ups of the arcade days, set in a 2.5D neon city. You move right, fight what is in front of you and keep going.

The sword and dash are the heart of it. Robots telegraph their attacks, and the game nudges you with a hint: dash through the wind-up. Doing that feels great. You slip past the hit and land behind them, ready to slash.

Each stage has its own robots and a row of progress dots along the top, so you can see the end coming. Coins drop as you fight, and the score keeps a running total of how clean your run was.

Tips for the five stages

Learn each robot's wind-up before you go on the attack. Dash through, do not run away. Keep the special for groups or tough enemies, since it takes time to charge. Watch your HP: it starts at 100 and you need it for the later stages.

Best for

Fans of neon cyberpunk style, ninja and samurai action and side-scrolling fighters. It is short, punchy and works well in a few minutes. The scene is dark, so turn your brightness up.
