Night in a forest clearing, a few lanterns, and creatures pouring in from the dark. Kite or Die is about the oldest trick in horde games: kiting. You run so the swarm follows you in a line, then turn it into a laser show. It belongs with wave survival games, but unlike Vampire Survivors you aim yourself and have four ability buttons to manage. It is free in the Roam app on iPhone.

How to survive the waves

Drag to run around the clearing.
Tap or drag on the right to aim your attacks.
Use the ability buttons: a lightning dash, a spiral attack and two weapon or skill slots.
Keep moving so enemies cannot surround you.
Clear the waves. The banner shows where you are, such as Wave 2 of 2.

Kite or Die vs Vampire Survivors

Vampire Survivors turned the horde shooter into a hit: you only move, your weapons fire on their own, and the screen fills with enemies until you are a walking storm. Kite or Die keeps the swarm and the running, but hands the aim back to you.

That changes the feel. Instead of picking upgrades and watching, you steer with one thumb and shoot with the other, and the four ability buttons decide whether you escape a crowd or get trapped by it.

What kiting means and how to do it

Kiting is running in a wide circle so enemies chase you in one group behind you. That way they come from one side, which is the side you shoot.

Do not stop in the middle of the clearing. Run along the edge, turn and fire, then keep going. Save the dash for when the circle closes in, and use the lightning or spiral when the group is packed tight.
