How to make a multiplayer game
A multiplayer game is a single-player game plus a lot of plumbing: servers, syncing, lag and matchmaking. The plumbing is usually harder than the game. The smart move is to pick a tool that handles most of it for you.
Why multiplayer is hard
- Servers. Someone has to run the game for everyone. Hosting costs money and needs to stay up.
- Sync. Every player must see the same world. Who decides if a shot hit, the shooter or the server?
- Lag. Messages take time. Games hide it by predicting movement and correcting later, which is tricky to get right.
- Matchmaking. Players need a way to find each other or join friends. Empty lobbies kill new games.
- Cheating. Anything the player's device decides can be faked. Important rules belong on the server.
Tools that handle it for you
- Roblox Studio. Roblox runs the game servers and matchmaking for you. You write server and client scripts in Luau. Studio runs on Windows and macOS.
- Fortnite (UEFN). Islands made with Epic's editor run on Fortnite's servers. The editor runs on a Windows PC.
- Unity and Godot. You add networking yourself. Unity has Netcode for GameObjects, Godot has a built-in multiplayer API. You also find hosting.
- Roam. A free iPhone app. Friends can be in the game you describe. Play solo if they are offline, together when they join. No netcode on your side.
Design tips for small multiplayer games
Design for two to eight players first. A game that is fun with four friends is better than one that needs fifty strangers.
Make it playable alone or with bots, so a half-empty lobby still works. Keep rounds short so late players join fast. Give each player a clear role or team color, so it is obvious who is who in a busy fight.
A multiplayer game in Roam, step by step
Describe the mode in one sentence: team sizes, place, goal. Play the first build alone to check it. Then bring friends in and ask for changes between rounds, like "bigger map" or "add a respawn timer".
Play it on Roam
