How to make a racing game

A racing game needs four things: handling that feels good, a track with checkpoints, rivals to beat and a reason the race stays close. Kart racers add items, and Mario Kart gives stronger ones to players further behind.

Car handling

Tracks, checkpoints and laps

Most racing games use invisible checkpoints placed in order around the track. A lap only counts when the car has passed all of them, so nobody can skip the track. The same checkpoints tell you where to respawn a car that falls off.

Make the first corner wide so the pack can spread out, and give each track one risky shortcut that saves time only if you nail it.

AI racers and keeping it close

AI cars follow a racing line of waypoints, with a little random error so they feel human. Many games quietly speed up cars that fall behind and slow the leader a bit. Kart racers go further with items: Mario Kart gives stronger items to players further back, so a race is never over after the first lap.
