A giant yellow 2 counts down over the start gate, and four buggies sit on a red canyon road. FLIPSIDE: Gravity Rally is a gravity racing game where the track climbs into loops and along the walls, and a Flip button switches which way is down. Boost on the straights, flip into a wall ride to slip past, and finish two laps in first. It runs in the Roam app on iPhone, against AI rivals.

Steering, flipping and boosting

  1. Steer with the stick in the bottom-left corner.
  2. Tap Flip to switch gravity and stick to a wall or the top of a loop.
  3. Tap Boost to burn extra speed on a straight.
  4. Watch the place counter at the top left, since the race can start with you in third of four.
  5. Finish both laps ahead of the three rivals to take the trophy.

What the canyon track throws at you

  • Loops and wall rides built into one red canyon circuit.
  • A gravity flip that turns a wall into a passing lane.
  • A Boost button that pays off on the long straights.
  • Chunky off-road buggies with big tires and neon trim.

If you like Mario Kart

The base is familiar: a short lap race, a handful of rivals, a boost button and a scramble for first place. The camera sits behind your buggy, and the pack stays close enough to pass and be passed.

The difference is the track. There are no item boxes or shells to throw. The canyon road bends up the walls instead, and flipping gravity at the right moment is how you gain places.

Getting more out of a gravity racing game

Try flipping as the road starts to curve up rather than in the middle of a turn. It is easier to hold your line that way, and you keep your speed into the wall ride.

Use Boost when the buggy points straight down the track, like on the way out of a loop. A race is only two laps, so treat the first one as a scouting lap to learn where the wall sections begin.

Rivals stay close all race, so a single good flip can swing two places. If you fall behind on lap one, the wall rides on lap two are where to make it back.
