You sit behind the wheel of a beat-up car on a foggy forest track, rain on the windshield and a grid of rivals around you. Shift or Shoot is one of those combat racing games where the gun matters as much as the gas, and it plays from the driver's seat in the Roam app on iPhone. Drag the wheel to steer, pull back to brake, work the gear shifter and fire at rivals. Three laps decide it.

Cockpit controls

Drag the steering wheel to steer. Pull back to brake.
Use the gear shifter to change gears.
Tap the orange button to shoot.
Use the small dash button for a burst of speed.
Finish 3 laps ahead of the pack. The standings list shows your place.

If you like Death Rally

Death Rally mixed racing with guns and beat-up cars. Shift or Shoot uses the same idea but moves the camera inside the car, so you see the track through the windshield.

That makes it more intense and a little harder. You judge corners and shots from the driver's seat. Rain and fog make the forest track feel dangerous even before anyone shoots.

Combat racing games: when to shoot

Shoot on straights. Aiming while you turn is harder, and a missed corner costs more than a missed shot. The car ahead is the easiest target, so line up behind it on a straight and fire.

Watch your health bar. Sometimes racing clean is better than trading hits, especially on the last lap. Use the dash to get out of trouble or to finish a pass.

For racers who want a gun

Racing fans who want more than a clean line, and shooter fans who want wheels. It is dark, wet and loud in feel, the opposite of a bright kart racer.

It also suits players who like a cockpit view. Hands on the wheel and a real shifter make every race feel close. Three laps keep a race short, so you can run it again right away.
