The interstate is dark, the billboards glow and your underglow lights the asphalt as the countdown ends. UNDERGLOW: Interstate Nights is one of those highway racing games where traffic is part of the track. You start 4th of 4 and weave between cars for near-miss, slipstream and overtake points, then hit NITRO or DRIFT to pull away. It plays in the Roam app on iPhone. Clip a car and you spin out.

Steering and boosts

  1. Drag your left thumb to steer.
  2. Weave close past traffic for near-miss points.
  3. Sit behind a rival to slipstream, then pass for overtake points.
  4. Tap NITRO on straights and DRIFT through bends.
  5. Finish ahead of the other 3 racers.

What makes it flashy

  • A synthwave night highway with billboards and glowing underglow
  • Points for near-misses, slipstream and overtakes
  • Spin-out physics when you clip traffic
  • Speed effects, a km/h readout and rival distance tags

If you like Need for Speed or Traffic Racer

Need for Speed gave night racing its style: neon, nitro and rivals on public roads. Traffic Racer made weaving through cars a whole game. UNDERGLOW mixes the two.

Races are short and the scoring rewards risk. Passing close to traffic earns points, so the best line is often the scariest one. You have to read traffic two cars ahead.

Highway racing games tip sheet

Save nitro for open lanes. Firing it into traffic is the fastest way to spin out.

Use rivals as cover. Slipstream behind one, then swing out right before a gap in traffic. The rival distance tag tells you how far ahead the next car is. After a spin-out, watch the km/h readout and rebuild speed before you try another close pass.

Arcade speed over realism

Players who like arcade racing over realism. The race is about steering, nitro, drift and traffic, not about tuning a car.

It also suits anyone who likes synthwave. The neon, the billboards and the underglow give the night road its own look, and a race is over in a few minutes.
