Which one to pick

Pick Summer Engine if

You want to ship a real 2D or 3D game to Steam, phones or the web, and you are fine working on a computer. It has physics, animation, a scene editor and hosted multiplayer, and it works with the coding agents you may already use.

Pick Roam if

You want a playable game on your phone without an engine, a project or a desktop. Type the idea and play it. Roam is an iPhone app, so Summer Engine fits better if you plan to sell on a store.

What Summer Engine does well

Summer Engine calls itself an AI game engine. You build 2D and 3D games with physics, animation and a scene editor, and an AI agent writes and changes the game for you. It works with its own agent and with Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.

It aims at games you can ship. The home page lists exports to Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android and the web. For Steam it prepares desktop builds, while store accounts, signing and review stay with you.

Is Summer Engine free?

Partly. The Free app includes the editor, MCP access and 5 AI messages a day, up to 30 a month, with no credit card. You can still build and export by hand in the editor after the messages run out.

Hosted Summer AI, frontier models and 3D, image, audio and video creation start on Pro at $20 a month. Pro+ is $60 with 3x the AI limits, and Ultra is $200 with 10x the AI usage of Pro. Used credits are not refundable. Check the pricing page before you subscribe.

Summer Engine vs Godot vs Unity

Godot is free and open source under the MIT license. You own your games, and you only need to include Godot's license notice. The editor runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and the web. Summer's own blog says Summer Engine is compatible with Godot 4 and uses the same scene, script and resource formats.

Unity Personal is free for people and small teams with less than $200K in revenue and funds raised in the last 12 months. Unity says it supports 25+ platforms. Neither Godot nor Unity writes the game for you out of the box; you add an AI tool or code it yourself.

Summer adds an AI agent on top of a full engine. Godot and Unity give you the engine and leave the AI to you. Roam skips the engine and gives you the game.

Other Summer Engine alternatives

  • Godot A free, open-source engine under the MIT license, for 2D and 3D. A good pick if you like Summer's Godot 4 formats and want to add your own AI tools.
  • Unity A full engine with a free Personal plan under $200K in revenue and funding. Unity says it supports 25+ platforms.
  • Ziva An AI agent that works inside the Godot editor. Hobby is free with your own Claude Code or Codex provider or local models, and Basic with hosted models is $20 a month.
  • Rosebud AI A website where you describe a game or pick a template. The free plan has 10,000 credits a week, and full commercial rights start on the 10x Dev plan at $30 a month.

Skip the desktop: a game on your phone

Summer Engine, Godot and Unity build a game project on a computer. Roam is for an idea and a phone: no engine, no code, no project files.

You type a sentence or add a photo of your dog, your friend or a meme. It comes back playable with a world, art, characters and rules. Then you say "more enemies" or "add a boss", and play it solo or with friends.

No engine, no desktop, still a game

Describe the dungeon crawler you would have built in Summer Engine, and play it on your iPhone with friends.

Try: "voxel dungeon crawler, a knight with a hammer, three goblin floors and a giant boss at the bottom"
