Roam

How to make a mystery game

A mystery game works when the player solves it, not the hero. Every clue must be visible before the reveal, the wrong answers must look right for a while, and the final answer must feel earned. Here is how to plan one and the tools to build it.

Plan the case backwards

Observation mysteries

Not every mystery needs a murder. Spot-the-difference loops like The Exit 8 (Kotake Create, 2023) make the room itself the puzzle: walk a corridor, notice what changed, turn back or keep going.

Hidden-person searches and "which one is lying" games are mysteries too, and they fit short sessions on a phone. The rule is the same: the answer is on screen, the player just has to see it.
