ChatGPT game maker: what it builds, and the other options

ChatGPT writes game code, often one HTML file. Here is how it compares with Claude, Replit, Lovable and Roam: what each builds, where the game runs and how you share it.

Quick answer

ChatGPT, Claude and coding agents like Replit and Lovable can all write working game code from a prompt, and small games such as Snake, Pong or a quiz often work. You still run the code, report bugs, host the game and share a link. Roam, an iPhone app where making works without a subscription, skips the code: you describe the game and play it.

Updated . Roam is our app, and the Roam team wrote this comparison. Roam is free to download and play on iPhone, and making works without a subscription; optional Spark and Reality plans and credit packs add more creation. Android: pre-register on Google Play.

Live multiplayer in a coded game needs networking code and a server that connects players, which you set up and run.

Which one to pick

Use ChatGPT or Claude if

You want to learn how a game works, you are fine reading errors, and the game is small: Snake, Pong, Breakout, a quiz or a text adventure.

Use Replit or Lovable if

You want a web app with a real URL and will steer an agent through rounds of testing and fixes.

Use Roam if

You want to play the game tonight on your iPhone, with friends in it, and never see a line of code.

What ChatGPT does well as a game maker

ChatGPT writes and fixes code in the chat, on web, iOS and Android, and even the Free plan includes limited access to Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. Ask for "a Breakout game in one HTML file with touch controls, 3 lives and a high score" and you get a file you can save and open.

It works best on classics with clear rules: Snake, Pong, Breakout, flappy-style jumpers, memory and quiz games, text adventures. The harder parts come as a game grows: more files, real art and sound, saved progress, and anything online.

How to make a game with ChatGPT, step by step

What it takes after the code

Turning code into a game your friends play is a set of jobs you do yourself.

  • Run it Save the code as an .html file and open it in a web browser. One file is easiest; bigger games need a folder and sometimes a local server.
  • Fix bugs When something breaks, you describe it or paste the error back into the chat, then swap in the new code. Every change repeats this loop.
  • Add art and sound Code alone draws shapes. For real art and sound you make or find files and ask the AI to wire them in.
  • Host it Friends cannot open a file on your laptop. You upload it to a game site or web host to get a public link.
  • Add multiplayer Playing together live needs networking code and a server that connects players. For beginners this is the hardest step.

Claude, Replit and Lovable: the same path, fewer steps

Claude can make small games and interactive tools as artifacts, on every plan including Free, and you can share them by link. People you share with need a Claude account, except for legacy artifacts published from a chat. For bigger projects, Claude Code can work in a project folder on your computer.

Replit's Agent builds apps from plain-language prompts, and publishing puts them at a .replit.app address. Publishing is on every plan; the Starter plan includes 1 published app that expires after 30 days and can be republished.

Lovable builds web apps from chat and publishes them to a lovable.app address, and publishing works even with zero credits. Its free plan gives 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month. It does not package apps for the App Store or Google Play.

When a game app is the shorter path

Every option above ends with a web page you made and now look after. Roam ends with a game inside an app.

You type the game in a sentence or start from a photo, and it comes back playable with a world, art, characters, sound and rules. You change it by talking: "more enemies", "make it two-player". No code, no engine, no project files. You keep ownership of what you make, and Roam gets a license to run, improve and showcase it.

Skip the code, play the game

Roam is free to download on iPhone. Type the game you would have asked a chatbot for, and play it with friends.

Try: "snake game in a pizza kitchen, eat toppings to grow, my friend steers the second snake"
